Create an editable Canva design from ChatGPT or Claude
The assistant says “your poster is ready” and shows a nice preview. The question is whether there’s a Canva design behind it that you can open and change, or just a picture of one.

What you'll make
one private, editable Canva design created from ChatGPT or Claude, with a link that opens in your Canva account and text you’ve checked you can change.
What you'll need
a Canva account (any plan, including Free, can connect), ChatGPT or Claude (your assistant may need a paid plan), your organisation’s go-ahead to connect them, checked copy for the design, and about 15 minutes. If the connection isn’t available, paste the same copy into Canva AI and follow making a first Canva AI design.
Example result.
Assistant reply: "Created a private square design in your Canva
account: Lunch-and-learn reminder (link)."
In Canva: title, date line and subtitle each select separately;
the icon moves on its own.
1. Connect Canva to your assistant
Canva’s AI connector page has a Connect button for each assistant.
- Claude: open Customize › Connectors, select Discover, search for Canva and select Connect to Claude, then sign in to Canva and approve the access it asks for. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds it first; members see Request instead.
- ChatGPT: use Connect in ChatGPT on Canva’s page, which opens ChatGPT’s connector settings, then follow the Canva authorisation prompts.
Sign in to the Canva account you mean to use. Never paste a password into a chat.
Why this works: the connection, not the prompt, decides whether a real design can exist. “Use Canva” in a chat that isn’t connected produces, at best, a picture.
What you should see: Canva listed as connected in your assistant’s settings.
2. Ask for one design from checked copy
Start a new chat with Canva switched on, and use copy you’ve already checked. The assistant needs the brief, not the whole conversation that produced it.
Use the Canva connection to create one new editable [format] design
for [audience]. Use only this copy, word for word: [checked copy].
Make the title, body text and graphics separate editable elements.
Return the link to the Canva design and keep it private. Do not
search or change my existing designs, share or publish anything, or
add details that aren't in the copy. If you can't create a Canva
design, say so instead of showing a preview.
[format] is the size, such as “square social post”; [audience] is who sees it; [checked copy] is the exact text.
Why this works: the last line gives the assistant a permitted way to fail. Without it, a preview image can arrive labelled “your design”.
What you should see: a reply with a Canva design link, not only an image.
3. Open it in Canva and prove it’s editable
Open the link in your Canva account. Select one text element and change a harmless word, such as the subtitle. Move one graphic slightly. Then check that the other text hasn’t moved or changed, and put everything back.
Why this works: if you can select and change each element separately, the design is editable. If one click selects everything, you have an image.
What you should see: separate text boxes and graphics, and the copy exactly as you supplied it.
Check the result
- The link opens a design in your own Canva account.
- Each piece of text selects and edits on its own.
- The copy matches what you supplied, word for word.
- The design is private until you decide who should see it.
The usual failure: the assistant returns a preview image, says the design is ready, and there’s no Canva link, or the link opens a flattened image where clicking anywhere selects the whole thing. Spot it by trying to select a single word.
The result is [a preview image with no Canva link, or a flattened
image]. Create the editable Canva design from the same copy, with
separate text and graphic elements, and return its link. If your
connection can't do that, tell me what's missing instead.
[a preview image with no Canva link, or a flattened image] is what you got. If it still can’t, use Canva AI directly with the same copy; repeating the request won’t create a capability that isn’t there.
Worked example: the subtitle can actually change
Fictional example. The checked copy:
Format: square social post
Title: Lunch-and-learn: spreadsheet shortcuts
Date line: Thursday 5 November, 12:15–12:45, Willow room
Subtitle: Optional session
The first reply showed a tidy preview and said “Your design is ready!”, with no link. The repair prompt produced a link to a private design in Canva. In Canva, the subtitle selected on its own; changing “Optional session” to “Practice draft” left the date line and room untouched, and the subtitle was changed back.
What mattered:
- “Ready” wasn’t evidence. Only the link, opened in Canva, showed a design existed.
- The edit test was harmless and reversible. One word changed and changed back, with nothing else touched.
- The facts were checked after the edit. A text box that reflows can push a time or room off the design, and that’s easy to miss.

Keep three permissions separate
The assistant’s connection, your access to the design, and the recipient’s access are three different things. Sharing a chat doesn’t share the Canva design, and sharing the design doesn’t share the chat. To disconnect, go to Your profile in Canva, then Integrations connected to Canva, and select Disconnect next to Canva AI Connector, or remove it in the assistant’s settings. Disconnecting doesn’t delete designs or remove anyone you’ve already shared them with.
Know which features need a paid plan
Creating, editing and searching designs work on every Canva plan. Resizing a design needs a paid Canva plan, and autofilling brand templates is Canva Enterprise only. Applying your Brand Kit is listed as a connector feature, but check it in your own account. Some features vary by assistant, so test the one you need before planning around it.
Write the brief before you connect anything
The connector only carries copy across; it can’t make weak copy good. Settle the wording, the facts and the format first, so the only thing you’re checking in Canva is the design. The method in making a first Canva AI design works well for that, and for review afterwards see the Canva AI beginner’s guide.
