# Stop an AI trend chart from connecting missing months

Distinguish missing, zero and omitted observations in the analysis request.

Use the supplied source as authority. Check the account supports the actual file or image operation before attempting it.

## Task instruction

Chart this supplied monthly dataset in chronological order.
Unit: [actual unit]. A blank means [source meaning]; zero is a valid
observed value. Show missing periods explicitly and break the line
at unavailable observations. Do not replace blanks with zero, join
across them or interpolate unless I explicitly request a labelled model.
Explain observed values and limits without inventing missing months,
causes or a continuous trend. Include the source table and actual file/source.

## Source boundaries

- January 12
- February observed 0
- March unavailable; April 18; May 16

## Review and correction

Ask AI to preserve absent observations and explain any connecting line. A missing month is not evidence of zero requests.

The chart [connects across / replaces with zero] the missing [period].
The source says that value is unavailable. Preserve the missing state,
show the period and break the line there. Keep the observed zero and
other source values unchanged. Correct any explanation that implies
a measured value, continuous trend or cause across the gap.
Return actual revised chart/source and prepared rows for review.

Use references/practice-source.json for the labelled example. The practice HTML is a local teaching tool; it does not call an AI service. Apply this method to the user's supplied facts rather than copying fictional example values. Do not infer approval or permission to publish.
